Woman in co-op public house (1984).
Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, East Germany.
From Ute Mahler’s series “Living Together” (Zusammenleben).

Under a portrait of the East German leader Erich Honecker, a woman reapplies her lipstick. I suspect that as East German society moved through the 80s the leadership could do little more than look on impotently as the culture slipped from their grasp. Who did they blame, I wonder, when the last vestiges of their social control spluttered like a Trabant running on fumes?
